CASA: Post-implementation review of the fatigue framework

We are conducting a post-implementation review (PIR) of the fatigue framework in Civil Aviation Order 48.1 Instrument 2019 (CAO 48.1) and would like to hear about your experience.

The PIR focuses on how the fatigue management system is working, examining:
  • whether pilots feel comfortable to report fatigue
  • how operators respond to fatigue-related reports and concerns
  • the education and training programs operators provide to help pilots manage fatigue effectively.
Recognising that fatigue affects individuals differently, it highlights the importance of adaptable, system-based approaches to managing fatigue risk rather than relying solely on prescriptive hour limits.

Your feedback will help us understand how the current fatigue management framework is working in practice and whether it is meeting the needs of Australia's diverse aviation industry.

Have your say
As part of this PIR, we are seeking feedback from commercial pilots and aircraft operators covered by the Appendices of CAO 48.1.

We are inviting commercial pilots to participate in a consultation that includes:
  • a survey for you to tell us about your experiences with the fatigue management arrangements
  • the opportunity to provide feedback on the discussion paper that is informing the review.
To ensure we capture both organisational and individual perspectives, we are also conducting a separate survey for aircraft operators. We are contacting operators directly for this purpose.
