A Discussion on Mindfulness
With more than 300 training vacancies published at the last round of allocations, many of our members will be busy planning for upcoming training or are already in the thick of their course.
Whilst we expend energy learning new recall items, checklists, procedures and systems, one of the greatest challenges can be managing your own head.
Our internal monologue is an important part of any training process and dealing with the thoughts - both negative and positive - is important.
To try and gain a better insight into this part of a pilot's make-up, I spoke with Qantas Captain Andrew Stewart (retired) about the topic of mindfulness and being kinder to ourselves.
Andrew works for PAN as a qualified psychotherapist and counsellor and has a Masters in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. He was able to provide some fascinating insights into who we are as pilots and how we can manage our minds as we undertake our training journeys or even a regular cyclic session.
This is the first "Stick With It" episode of the new series with a number of other episodes to be released in the coming weeks. To listen, click HERE.
Andrew has recommended a number of apps and books on the topic of mindfulness and a list of those can be found HERE.
I trust you enjoy the chat.
Fly safe and stick with it.
